Early life

Bernard Arnault’s real name is Bernard Jean Etienne Arnault. He was born on March 5 1949, to Jean Leon Arnault and Marie-Josephe Savinel, in Roubaix, France. His father was a manufacturer and his mother was the owner of a civil engineering company Ferret-Savinel. Bernard completed his education at Lycee Faidherbe high school, and he graduated from the most prestigious and top engineering school in France, Ecole Polytechnique. In 1950, Savinel transferred Ferret-Savinel management to Bernard’s father, later the owner of the company was also transferred to his father.


After his graduation in 1971, he joined his father’s company. In 1978, he became president of the company and continued to be president until 1984. 

In 1984, with the help of Antione Bernheim, he acquired the luxury goods company, Financiere Agache. After a few years, he became the CEO of the Financiere Agache and took over Boussac Saint-Frères. Boussac owns many brands including Christian Dior, Le Bon Marche, Conforama, Peaudouce. He sold all of Bassac’s assets except Christian Dior and Le Bon Marche. By 1985, he became the CEO of Christian Dior. In 1987, he invested in LVMH. By 1989, he had 43.5% of LVMH shares and became the largest shareholder of the company. After his control over Louis Vuitton, he fired 9000 workers in two years. This resulted in the company’s profit increasing to $112 million on revenue of $1.9 billion.

Since then LVMH has become the largest luxury goods company in the world. LVMH sales increase rapidly this results in the increased market value of the company. Today LVMH owns more than 75 luxury brands.

Arnault invested in different companies such as Netflix, Zebank, Princess Yachts, Boo.com, Colony Capital, Marc Jacobs, Château Cheval Blanc, Kenzo, Celine, Sephora, Guerlain, and many others.

Bernard Arnault is an Art collector too. Some of his collections include Picasso, Henry Moore, Yves Klein, and  Andy Warhol.

Personal life

In 1973, Bernard married Anne  Dewavrin. The couple has two children Delphine and Antoine. They divorced in 1990.

In 1991, he married a professional Canadian concert pianist, Helene Mercier. The couple has 3 children’s Alexander Frederic and Jean. Four of his five children are part of the LVMH empire. Except for Jean, everyone has their official role in the company.
